What a smart city actually means: seven products and the data they produce
No buzzwords: what actually gets installed on the street, what each device measures, and what decision the data supports.
“Smart city” has come to mean anything. In practice it is ordinary infrastructure with three things added: its own power source, a sensor, and a way for the data to reach somewhere. The rest is what you do with the data.
1. The solar bench
A photovoltaic panel on the backrest or canopy powers USB and wireless charging, ambient lighting and optionally a Wi-Fi hotspot. It needs no mains connection, so it can go where you cannot run a cable.
Data it produces: charges per day, at what hours, how much the panel generated. From that you learn where people gather — useful when deciding where the next one goes.
2. The bin with a fill sensor
A sensor measures how full it is, and some models compact automatically, multiplying effective capacity.
Data it produces: fill level in real time. This is the most concrete saving on the whole list: the collection truck stops running a fixed route and goes only where needed.
3. Solar street lighting with motion detection
A pole with panel, battery and LED in one assembly. Light drops to 20-30% when nobody passes and returns to full on detection.
Data it produces: operating hours, battery level, activations per night. That last figure is a rough pedestrian traffic indicator.
4. The smart bus shelter
A shelter with lighting, a timetable display and, in full versions, Wi-Fi and charging.
Data it produces: connected to the transport system, it can show actual arrival rather than the printed timetable. The gap between the two is itself a measure of public transport quality.
5. Sensor-equipped parking
One sensor per space and LED displays at the entrance showing free spaces.
Data it produces: occupancy by hour and day. Studies in large cities show a significant share of central traffic is cars looking for a space. The exact figure differs by city — the direction does not.
6. The multifunctional pole
A single pole carrying lighting, cameras, communications equipment and connection points. Its rationale is not technological but urban: fewer objects on the pavement.
7. The solar carport
A structure that shelters parking spaces and generates energy. It pairs naturally with EV charging — the energy is produced exactly where it is consumed.
The part that actually matters
The hardware is the easy part. The difference between a city that bought devices and a city that became more efficient lies in what happens to the data: whether it lands in one place, whether anyone looks at it, whether it changes a decision.
A bin that reports it is full, into a system nobody opens, is just a more expensive bin.
A reasonable place to start
Not with the most visible purchase, but with the one whose effect you can measure. In most cases that means lighting and waste collection — both produce monthly data you can compare before and after.
