Sensors in a smart city: what they measure, and what they cannot
What the sensors inside a bench, a waste bin or a lamp post actually do, what data they produce, and where their limits are.
“Smart city” sounds abstract until you see what is actually inside one of these objects: a small, cheap part that measures one single thing and sends it on. The intelligence is not in the sensor, it is in what you do with what it measured.
What the common sensors measure
Fill level — in waste bins
A sensor sends a pulse downwards and measures how long it takes to come back. Short distance means a full bin. That is all. But something useful follows: the collection round can follow the bins that are actually full, rather than a fixed timetable.
Presence and movement — in lighting
It detects whether somebody passes the post. The practical application is lighting that runs at reduced power while nobody is around and rises when a person or a vehicle passes.
Occupancy — in car parks
A sensor in the tarmac or a camera that recognises free spaces. This is where the display at the entrance comes from, telling you how many spaces are left, which shortens the search.
Environment — on posts and on furniture
Temperature, humidity, noise, airborne particles. These are the simplest and the most often misunderstood: an air quality sensor does not tell you who is polluting, only that the value rose, at one specific point.
Consumption and technical status
How much a solar panel produces, how much battery is left, whether a light fitting has failed. The least spectacular part and often the most useful: you know what broke before anybody phones in.
What sensors CANNOT do
This is where most unrealistic expectations come from:
- They do not identify people. A movement sensor does not know who passed, only that something did. That is a technical limitation, but also the right choice from a data protection point of view.
- They do not explain why. They show you that traffic rose on Tuesday morning, not why.
- They do not work without maintenance. A dirty sensor or one with a flat battery sends wrong data, which is worse than sending none.
- They solve nothing on their own. Data without somebody looking at it and changing something is just a nice-looking chart.
The question to ask before any purchase
What decision will I make differently once I have this data?
If the answer is “we will see”, the sensor can wait. If the answer is “the bin lorry route follows fill level, not the calendar”, it is an investment with a clear effect.
How the data gets from the post to a screen
In short, in three steps: the sensor measures and transmits over a low-power network designed for short, infrequent messages; a server receives and stores it; an application displays it. Batteries in well-chosen sensors last for years, precisely because they send little and rarely.
Worth knowing beforehand
- Who owns the data — the city or the supplier. Settled in the contract, not afterwards.
- What happens if you change supplier in five years. If the data cannot be exported, you are tied in.
- Who changes the batteries, and how often.
- Whether the system can accept sensors from another manufacturer. A closed system becomes a problem exactly when you want to grow.
